Autism and Repetitive Behaviors: Understanding Stimming
This course introduces the concept of stimming, short for self-stimulatory behavior. Stimming refers to repetitive movements, sounds, or actions that people use to regulate their emotions, manage sensory input, or express themselves. While often associated with autism, stimming is not exclusive to autistic individuals, many people engage in similar behaviors, such as tapping a pencil, humming, or twirling hair. By the end of this course, learners will gain a deeper understanding of stimming as a natural human behavior, with particular insight into its importance for autistic individuals. The course emphasizes respect, inclusion, and practical strategies for supporting people who stim in educational, professional, and community settings. (2 hours)
