Autism Language Explained: Person-First vs. Identity-First
Language matters, especially when it comes to how we talk about autism. This course explores two common approaches: person-first language (example: “person with autism”) and identity-first language (example: “autistic person”). While many people have traditionally used person-first language to sound polite or respectful, research and lived experience show that most individuals who identify as autistic prefer identity-first language.
