Birth to Three
Understanding Object Permanence in Child Development
This course is designed for early childhood educators to deepen their understanding of object permanence, a fundamental concept in cognitive development. Object permanence is a crucial cognitive skill that significantly impacts a child’s overall development. It enables children to understand that objects and people continue to exist even when they are not directly seen or heard. For many children, separation anxiety can be a challenging experience. During these times of being apart from loved ones, the concept of object permanence becomes especially important. Understanding that their caregivers still exist, even when out of sight, can provide children with a sense of security and reduce anxiety. There are many fun and interactive ways educators and caregivers can help infants and toddlers explore and develop the concept of object permanence. Through engaging activities and games, such as peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek, children can gradually build this essential cognitive skill in a supportive and enjoyable environment. (2 hours)
