About this Course

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the respiratory system and can pose serious health risks, particularly for infants and young children. Once a leading cause of childhood death, the widespread use of vaccines dramatically reduced the incidence of the disease. Despite these advances, pertussis remains a significant public health concern, with periodic outbreaks continuing to occur worldwide. For child care providers and educators, understanding how to recognize, prevent, and respond to pertussis is essential for protecting the health and safety of children in their care. This course provides a comprehensive overview of pertussis, including its causes, transmission, symptoms, and potential complications. Participants will explore the history of the disease, the role of immunization in prevention, and factors that have contributed to the resurgence of pertussis in recent decades. Learners will examine the three clinical stages of pertussis and gain the knowledge needed to recognize early warning signs and symptoms. The course emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis, timely medical treatment, and appropriate response measures to reduce the risk of severe illness and limit the spread of infection. Additionally, participants will learn practical prevention strategies, including vaccination, infection-control practices, exclusion guidelines, and methods for protecting vulnerable populations such as infants, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The course also highlights the role child care providers play in promoting health awareness and maintaining safe, healthy environments.  🌟 IMPORTANT INFORMATION 🌟 ✔️ Washington State Nexport courses are not approved in Washington state to meet annual STARS training requirements.
