About this Course

This course provides early childhood educators with a comprehensive introduction to teaching mathematics in preschool settings through the effective use of manipulatives and hands-on learning experiences. Participants will explore how young children develop mathematical understanding, examine key principles of cognitive development, and gain insight into the ways preschoolers learn and process new concepts. The course highlights the role of manipulatives in supporting emerging math skills and demonstrates how concrete, interactive materials can help children build foundational understanding in areas such as number sense, counting, sorting, patterns, measurement, geometry, and problem-solving. Participants will also learn about the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and its influence on early childhood math education, including important focal points and connections that guide effective instruction. Emphasis is placed on practical classroom applications, including strategies for selecting, implementing, and managing manipulatives to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences. A variety of developmentally appropriate math activities are presented to help educators foster mathematical thinking through exploration and play. In addition, the course examines assessment considerations and techniques that support the observation, documentation, and evaluation of children's mathematical growth. 🌟 IMPORTANT INFORMATION 🌟 ✔️ Washington State Nexport courses are not approved in Washington state to meet annual STARS training requirements.
