Participants will examine the various forms of media to which children are exposed, including television, digital devices, social media, video games, streaming content, and online platforms. The course provides an overview of how media influences children's cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral development, both positively and negatively. Special attention is given to the effects of media violence and the potential consequences of repeated exposure to violent content. Participants will learn to recognize signs of media-related stress and trauma in children and explore effective strategies for supporting media-traumatized learners. The course also examines the role of advertising in shaping children’s attitudes, preferences, and consumer behaviors, while providing practical approaches for helping children develop critical media literacy skills and resist inappropriate marketing influences. In addition, participants will gain an understanding of important laws and regulations designed to protect children in digital environments, including the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
