About this Course

This course introduces early childhood educators to the foundations of language and literacy development in preschool-aged children. Participants will explore the key components of early literacy, including oral language, vocabulary development, phonological awareness, print awareness, letter knowledge, and early reading and writing skills. The course also examines the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) goals and recommendations for fostering literacy development during the preschool years. Through a focus on developmentally appropriate practices, participants will learn effective teaching strategies that support young children's emerging language and literacy abilities. The course highlights engaging activities, interactive experiences, and classroom practices designed to promote a love of reading, strengthen communication skills, and build a strong foundation for future academic success. In addition, the course explores emergent writing development and the stages through which young children progress as they begin to express themselves through drawing, scribbling, and early writing attempts.
