About this Course

Children may experience grief as a result of the death of a loved one, family changes, natural disasters, community emergencies, or other significant losses. Because children process loss differently than adults, child care providers play an important role in helping them understand their feelings, express emotions in healthy ways, and develop resilience during difficult times. This course provides child care professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support children experiencing grief and loss. Participants will explore the phases of grief and examine the emotional, behavioral, and physical reactions children may display when coping with loss or stressful events. The course discusses how children's understanding of grief varies by age and developmental stage, and how caregivers can provide consistent support and reassurance throughout the grieving process. Learners will gain practical strategies for helping children express emotions, build healthy coping skills, and maintain a sense of safety and stability during challenging circumstances. In addition, the course addresses behaviors that may indicate a child is having difficulty managing grief or stress and outlines appropriate steps for monitoring concerns and seeking additional support when needed. Participants will also learn effective communication techniques for discussing observations with parents and families in a sensitive, compassionate, and professional manner. By understanding children's grief responses and implementing supportive practices, child care providers can help children navigate loss and move toward healing and emotional well-being. 🌟 IMPORTANT INFORMATION 🌟 ✔️ Washington State Nexport courses are not approved in Washington state to meet annual STARS training requirements.
